Faculty and students from San Francisco State University's Clinical Laboratory Science (CLS) Program attended the California Association for Medical Laboratory Technology (CAMLT) 87th Annual Meeting and Symposium, held Oct. 9-10, 2026, in Carson, California.

Angel Cermeno and Casey Smith, both CLS spring 2026 students, represented the University at the CAMLT Student Forum. They presented a clinical case study on warm autoimmune hemolytic anemia in blood bank and transfusion medicine.

The CAMLT Student Forum brings together clinical laboratory science students from programs across California to present clinical case studies to fellow students, faculty and industry professionals. Students are evaluated using a structured scoring system, with prizes awarded for outstanding presentations.

Warm autoimmune hemolytic anemia is a condition in which the body's immune system mistakenly attacks its own red blood cells. It can be especially challenging in transfusion medicine because finding compatible blood requires specialized knowledge, careful analysis and precision.

By presenting this complex clinical case to a statewide audience, Cermeno and Smith demonstrated their clinical knowledge, critical thinking skills and ability to apply what they have learned in a professional setting.

Their participation reflects the CLS Program's commitment to preparing students for careers in laboratory medicine and giving them opportunities to connect with professionals in the field.
