Why did you choose to attend the SFSU Post-Bac Program?
The diversity, inclusivity and shared sense of purpose create an environment where people genuinely support and uplift one another. Plus, its locations gave me the freedom and accessibility with public transportation, I can go anywhere without needing a car. After long, demanding days of studying, it’s comforting to know that the city’s vibrant, around-the-clock dining options are always there to recharge both body and mind. In addition, this community is built on a foundation of mutual support. It is not about being handed answers, but rather about being provided with the tools, structure and guidance needed to succeed. The roadmap is there, but it is up to each individual to take initiative, stay proactive and pursue their goals with intention and determination.
What is/was your favorite spot on the SFSU campus and why?
I deeply value the library, with its extended hours, reliable study spaces, and accessible resources like printing and academic support.
Which SFSU Post-Bac class was your favorite and why?
Academically, studying biochemistry and molecular biology has been especially inspiring. Although I had taken the course before, Professor Deepika Ahuja transformed my understanding and everything finally clicked, and my passion for the subject deepened.
What is/was your favorite thing to do in SF?
Whenever time allowed, my daughter and I made the most of every moment like exploring San Francisco’s incredible food scene and walking through the SFSU campus together to spark my daughter’s excitement for higher education. The time we shared was truly invaluable. It wasn’t about the when, where or what, it was about experiencing it all alongside my daughter. Every moment became meaningful, from something as simple as a bus or BART ride to walking the Lands End Trail together. It was about being present, growing together and creating lasting memories while gaining experience side by side.
Tell us something you learned as an SFSU Post-Bac that is important to you.
One of the most important lessons I’ve learned is the value of breaking large goals into manageable tasks and intentionally scheduling them. Equally important is understanding that seeking help and guidance is not only acceptable, it’s essential for growth. Support is a two-way exchange, and both offering it and receiving it play a vital role in personal and academic development.
For a long time, I found it difficult to ask for help or rely on others, even though I took great satisfaction in supporting those around me. However, my experience in the SFSU post-baccalaureate community transformed that mindset, showing me the true strength and impact of a collaborative, supportive environment.
What advice would you give to incoming post-bac students?
One of the most transformative aspects of my journey has been learning the power of planning. I cannot emphasize enough how impactful it has been to work closely with an advisor. That guidance has played a significant role in my success. My advice is to start planning early and revisit your plan often and refining it as you grow and as your goals evolve.
What resources have you used while a post-bac to help you reach your goals?
I’ve taken full advantage of the program’s services, and one of the most impactful experiences has been working with a learning specialist. She helped me better understand my strengths and areas for growth, while introducing new strategies that transformed how I approach learning.
Did you make meaningful friendships in the program? If so, tell us about them.
Reflecting on my experience, I can confidently say that the friendships I built at SFSU played a transformative role in my growth. Before meeting them, I relied heavily on printing materials and taking notes by hand. Through their guidance and example, I embraced more efficient, technology-driven approaches, learning to save, organize, access and share information seamlessly with just a few clicks. It’s something we still laugh about from time to time during our Zoom conversations.
