NEW: SF State Chinese Language Flagship Partner Program
Summer Classes in Mandarin Chinese
Announcing a rare opportunity for highly motivated and disciplined students:
SF State has been awarded a prestigious grant from the National Security Education Program (NSEP) to establish The SF State Chinese Language Flagship Partner Program. The goal of this honors program is to assist a select cohort of students achieve superior Chinese (Mandarin) language proficiency while pursuing degrees in the academic major of their choice. The innovative curriculum combines intensive language instruction (group classes and tutorials), mentoring by Chinese-speaking faculty in the various disciplines, study abroad in Flagship Centers in China, internships, and culminating projects in order to produce graduates with professional-level Mandarin language proficiency in their chosen career domains. Advancement in the Flagship will be by competitive application. For those selected to undertake high-intermediate to advanced training, both at SF State and abroad in China, there will be generous scholarships available.
No previous knowledge of Chinese is required to begin the program. We will be offering a special accelerated version of CHIN 101: First Semester Chinese and CHIN 102: Second Semester Chinese for interested novice students during the Summer Session, from June 8th to August 14th. Classroom instruction will be augmented by tutorials, training in web and media Chinese, and field trips. The total cost will be $750; ten academic units will be awarded to those who successfully complete the two courses. Students register through the College of Extended Learning.
Students with existing mid-elementary Chinese skills may start on July 13th for CHIN 102 only. Those who are already at the low- to mid-intermediate level may join during the academic year, and will be placed in appropriate classes, upon advisement.
