How To Drop A Course

A student must officially drop course(s) and request a refund by the drop deadline. To drop a course, submit an SF State Extended Learning add/drop form in person or call 415.405.7700. The effective date of a refund is the day the add/drop form is received by SF State Extended Learning. Classes may be dropped via online registration only if the class has not yet begun AND students have not submitted payment for class (payments include subsidies and discounts).

To drop a course after it has started or after payment was submitted, students will need to either call Student Services at 415.405.7700 [option 5] or come in person to the Extended Learning counter at either the Main Campus or the Downtown Campus. Drops cannot be requested through email. Students are not automatically dropped for non-attendance.

For more information on drop deadlines and refunds, see Open University refunds and Calendar and Deadlines.

Refunds/Drop Deadlines

Students must officially request refunds by the Drop Deadline by completing and signing an SF State Extended Learning refund/add/drop request form. Students who miss the Drop Deadline must officially withdraw from their academic courses. The effective date of a refund is the day the request is received by SF State Extended Learning. To drop by phone, call 415.405.7700.

Refunds are provided to students according to the following chart:

Refund checks are mailed to students approximately six to eight weeks after the date the add/drop form is received by SF State Extended Learning. According to CSU regulations, credit card accounts cannot be credited.

Do not put a stop payment on a check or credit card charge to drop or withdraw from a course. This results in a financial obligation to SF State for the course fee, plus an additional $20 charge.

Canceled Courses/Changes in Time or Dates

Students enrolled in classes that are canceled, postponed, combined, or have dates and/or times changed may request a full refund or transfer of course fees to other classes. Students may request a refund or fee transfer in person or by calling 415.405.7700. Refund checks are mailed approximately six to eight weeks from the date the refund request is received. According to CSU regulations, credit card accounts cannot be credited. For canceled courses, refunds are processed automatically.

Transfer of Fees: 415.405.7700

Transfer of fees is permitted for adding and dropping if the transaction is submitted in person on one add/drop form, or by phone to SF State Extended Learning by the Drop Deadline. After the Drop Deadline, students must withdraw from courses which earn academic credit. During the Early Withdrawal Period a transfer of fees is permitted only if students submit an add/drop form and a petition for withdrawal signed by instructor and department chair/program director in person to the Extended Learning office. If the amount of the added course exceeds the amount of the available refund for the dropped course(s), the non-refundable portion of the dropped course fees can be applied toward total fees due. These non-refundable fees are not included in any subsequent refund calculation.
