Financial Aid

SF State Extended Learning receives no state money to support its programs; therefore, financial aid is extremely limited. Financial aid, if granted, is only available to students who are enrolled in at least six units per semester and are admitted to a financial aid-approved Extended Learning certificate or degree program (see list below).

To avoid being dropped for non-payment, students should confirm financial aid approval in the Extended Learning system prior to registration. Students can check their Extended Learning financial aid status online through the SF State Extended Learning online registration system, or they can call 415.405.7700.

Students who have an "approved" financial aid status in the Extended Learning system will not be dropped from their courses for non-payment, and will remain enrolled until their financial aid disburses.

Since financial aid students are not dropped from courses for non-payment, these students will need to actively drop any course they do not wish to take. Courses can be dropped online, over the phone, or in person. (See How to Drop a Course.) Failure to drop a course by the deadline may result in a financial obligation to the University and possibly an ‘F’ or a ‘WU’ on the student’s transcript. Students should check their schedule often to ensure accuracy using MySFSU.

Students are responsible for knowing their disbursement dates and award amounts. Having an "approved" financial aid status in the Extended Learning system does not guarantee that a student’s disbursement will cover the full cost of course fees. If a student’s disbursement is less than the full amount owed, the remaining balance is due to Extended Learning immediately upon disbursement. Financial aid students with balances that remain due after the Drop Deadline risk one or more of these post deadline consequences: being dropped from one or more courses, application of late fees, and/or a hold on future financial aid.

Students who are "approved" for financial aid in the Extended Learning system may still have some Financial Aid holds on their record that prevent disbursement of their award. To confirm that no holds exist and that a disbursement will occur, students should contact their Financial Aid counselor.

Students who do not have their "approved" financial aid status in place in the Extended Learning system before registering for classes will be personally responsible for paying fees by their payment due date. Students who are not "approved" for financial aid and who do not self-pay for classes, will be dropped for non-payment. Students may re-enroll on a space available basis. When re-enrolling, students are responsible for paying fees by their new payment due date. If classes have already begun, an instructor signature will be required to re-enroll in the class, and payment must be made at the time of registration.

(See Understanding Financial Aid Information on MySFSU.)

Students should talk to their financial aid advisor often to remain up-to-date on their status and disbursement.
