Holds/Financial Obligations

Students with holds at SF State are not eligible to register. Students with financial obligations have holds placed on their records and must pay debts prior to registration. Students with financial holds are allowed to register through SF State Extended Learning and cannot receive transcripts or SF State registration packets. If the obligation continues to appear on SF State reports, the student's name is submitted to the Franchise Tax Board. The State then has the authority to withhold amounts owed to SF State from any tax refund. Please call the SF State Bursar's Office at 415.338.1281 for information.

New Students

Students who have never registered at SF State (or did so prior to 1986), can still register by setting up their student record at Create SF State ID.

Students should be aware of registration, add/drop, withdrawal and refund deadlines that can affect academic status and cost money. For complete policy details, see the "Information & Policies" section, Open University policies, and the Calendar & Deadlines section.

Online Registration

Extended Learning online registration is strongly encouraged for all courses. Many classes reach their enrollment limit well before the first class meeting.

First Class Meeting Registration

If you plan to enroll at the first class meeting, please check the online schedule for schedule changes and space availability before coming in to enroll. After obtaining the instructor's signature, you must submit completed registration form and payment by check, money order or cashier's check (no cash) to the college's SF State campus or Downtown Campus office.

Payment Due Date

When you enroll online at SF State Gateway, both your fees owed and due date will display in the Finances section of the Student Center. Full fees are payable as soon as students are registered. If full payment is not received by the end of the day on the payment due date, students are automatically dropped for non-payment. If you enroll in multiple courses with different due dates, all fees owed are due at your earliest due date. If you only pay partial feels, you will be dropped. If you are an Open University student, please see the payment due date on the Open University Registration page. Otherwise, payment due dates are calculated by adding five calendar days , to the date of registration with the following exceptions:

  1. If registration takes place within five calendar days of the beginning of a course, fees are due the day before a course begins.
  2. If a student registers for multiple courses with different due dates, total fees must be paid by the earliest due date.
