OLLI Interest Groups

The Interest Groups are an outgrowth of our members' wishes to explore deeper into a particular topic. Included in your membership is the opportunity to take part in these discussion groups which usually meet on a monthly basis. All members at all levels are welcome to take part in the ongoing, vibrant discussions throughout the academic year. The groups are organized and facilitated by OLLI members. Following are descriptions of each our current groups.

Aging Explorers

We are exploring aging together. We read, talk, argue, learn, laugh, and create. Our purpose is to create community and a space in which we can all talk about problems of aging and understand, prepare for, prevent, live with, help each other with, or advocate solutions to them. Since Spring 2008, we have created a monthly lecture and discussion series on aging for OLLI members and the public.

A Caring Community Study Group

Caring communities are being formed all over the country. The purpose of this study group is to learn from them. In our second year, we will continue our research and study different models and hear activists and experts describe their work and ideas. An objective is to develop a caring community among interested members of the group and a model that members can take into their own neighborhoods.

Drumming & Healing Circle

The circle is a powerful force for healing self and extending healing to others. We learn how to journey, a guided meditation, to retrieve information from our spirit guides on how we can heal ourselves. Drums and rattles are the tools which assist us in getting to the altered state. Join us in our work learning more about our spirit helpers and ourselves. We welcome new members to the ongoing circle. This work is based on the core shamanism practice created by anthropologist and shamanic practitioner, Michael Harner, and the traditions of Indigenous Siberian Shamans.

World Affairs Discussion Group (WAD-G)

The group discusses issues of world importance. Often one member gives a short report on a topic, and then the group discusses it. We invite OLLI members who like to read and keep up, listen and share ideas to join us.

Ideas for Investors Group

All OLLI members are invited to join the newly-formed Interest Group.

Each meeting of the group contains three (3) segments:

  1. News Segment: Significant news about investments led by specified member;
  2. Report Segment:  Researched report by specified member;
  3. Open Segment:  discussion, questions, assign leaders for next meeting.

The News Segment allows a presenter to dig deeper than the headlines and give the group a better understanding of how news event(s) might affect investment sectors.

The Report Segment allows a presenter to list significant data on a subject familiar to him/her or of especial interest to him/her.  The intention is to educate and inform the group about specific stocks or sectors as well as trading techniques and market issues.

The Open Segment allows the knowledge base of individuals to spill out and inform everyone, and to allow nagging questions to be heard.  And during this segment we would pick the leaders and topics for the next meeting.
