Spring 2009 - Deborah Slater

Deborah Slater has been performing, choreographing and directing in theater and dance for over 25 years. In 2008, she was awarded a CHIME Mentorship grant to mentor Cynthia Adams from Fellow Travelers as well as a Mentorship to be mentored, by Tony Taccone, Artistic Director of Berkeley Rep, from Theater Bay Area. In 2007, DSDT was awarded an IZZIE for HOTEL OF MEMORIES, in addition to three previous nominations.
Selected collaborations with theater and dance companies include the Magic Theater, A Traveling Jewish Theater, Dell 'Arte, Theaterworks/San Jose and San Diego Repertory Theater. Selected commissions include the Yerba Buena Gardens Arts Festival (06, 07, 08), Djerassi Resident Artist Program Salon, The Cocteau Centenary in Los Angeles, the Kings County Arts Commission in Seattle and the Exploratorium in San Francisco. Residencies include Red Cinder Creativity Center on the Big Island in Hawaii, Djerassi Resident Artist Center in California and Artists International Workshop in Assisi, Italy.
Ms. Slater co-founded CIRCUIT NETWORK, an arts management consortium; was a founding board member of the Peoples Theater Coalition (Life on the Water Theater) and was on the board of Dance Bay Area for 5 years. In 1989, she founded ART OF THE MATTER, a non-profit dedicated to the idea that art and everyday life are not separate events. Ms. Slater serves as a Mentor for the Vision Series for High School and Emerging Choreographers and recently completed 6 years as a member of the Executive Committee of the Djerassi Resident Artists Program Board.
Deborah Slater Dance Theater has been presented both nationally and internationally. DSDT is the recipient of numerous grants, commissions and fellowships including the NEA (nine), San Francisco Arts Commission, Marin Arts Council Fellowships, and ongoing support from the Zellerbach Family Fund, San Francisco Hotel Tax/Grants for the Arts and the Vanguard Foundation. The company is on the Young Audiences of Northern California roster and was on the CAC Rural and Urban Touring Program. Ms. Slater has taught at colleges and festivals including Cal Arts, Stanford, Osher Lifelong Learning Institute - SF State (OLLI), The Fromm Institute, California College of the Arts, the American College Dance Festival and SF State University.
