Meeting Planning

"After taking the whole program, I am very pleased to have clear ideas and insights on what should be done to successfully manage meetings and events and how to prepare myself to meet client's objectives. Negotiation, contracts, and on-site management were especially helpful and gave me valuable guidelines. I plan to start my own business in the meeting & event sector in Korea. I strongly believe that I can apply what I have learned from these courses to the reality of the profession."

Introduction: Event & Meeting Planning

The College of Extended Learning Event & Meeting Planning certificate has been developed to acquaint the student with the common components of managing and planning well-executed meetings and events; including selection of appropriate sites, pre-event publicity and marketing, audio-visual aids, budgeting, negotiation, and contracts. The SF State program was designed by event and meeting industry professionals to meet the growing need for industry professionals. The program offers a curriculum focusing on practical knowledge taught by instructors with first-hand experience in their fields. Many of the faculty are affiliated with the Northern California Chapter of Meeting Professionals International (MPI).

What does an event and meeting planner do? Below are some of the key tasks that a full-service event planner performs for the clients:

  • Determine client’s needs and expectations
  • Plan and create the overall design of the event
  • Develop timelines and production schedules
  • Manage the operations team or support staff
  • Coordinate and provide service to the clients and vendors as needed (even 24 hours!)
  • Oversee all aspects of the event execution
  • Select and secure appropriate vendors to supply all components of the event
  • Monitor and evaluate the event

Event & Meeting Planning Certificate Education

The program includes a mixture of core event planning and meeting planning courses and electives. Courses carry CEUs (continuing education units), nationally recognized units of measurement for professional development and training. CEUs may be used when employers, agencies, and other authorities require a specified number of hours of study and where non-academic credit is acceptable. One CEU is equal to 10 hours of instruction.
