About the Program

Our Program

Our classes are appropriate for:

  • Working professionals, or those wishing to enter the job market or change careers
  • Graduate and undergraduate students
  • Foreign visitors and tourists

To benefit from English for Professional Purposes classes, participants must have some background in English. Class size is limited to ensure maximum participation and attention for all students. Fee includes course reader. Additional textbook and/or audio/videotape may be required or recommended for some courses.

Program Approach

We believe that you learn best when you are fully engaged by your subject, so our practical, highly interactive approach teaches you skills that can be applied immediately to your workplace or to your personal life. Unlike intensive English programs that are very academic, or newcomer ESL programs that teach survival skills, the EPP understands that our students need sophisticated, often subtle skills to advance in their careers, change jobs, or generally feel more at ease when communicating in English in a variety of situations. Thus, the EPP takes a pragmatic, real-world approach that builds on the life and work experiences our students, generally working professionals, bring to our classes. All EPP classes are designed for maximum participation and provide individualized feedback on a regular basis.

Determining Your Level

The EPP is designed for individuals with an intermediate to advanced proficiency level in English.

If you are unsure about your level or about which class is appropriate for you, you can:

  • Get student advising from EPP teachers at our free information session
  • Contact the program coordinator at 415.817.4247, for advising over the phone

The first meeting of each class usually includes some form of diagnostic work. If the instructor determines that the class is not appropriate to your level of English, s/he will recommend a more appropriate class for you to take if one is available. Students who attend the free information session or who receive advising over the phone rarely have to transfer from their courses. Students must pre-register for all EPP classes.

What Goes on in Class?

What Participants Say
About Our Courses

Business Writing for Non-Native English Speakers really helped me to gain confidence in my writing skills, especially in my work area. The class and the teacher are the best!”
-Victoria Bimberg, Legal Secretary, Bimberg & Assoc.

"Speaking Effectively: Developing Pronuciation and Conversation Strategies has helped me feel more confident in interacting with native speakers and advanced my skills in dealing with everyday life situations that are different than I was accustomed to in my home country. Videos, role-playing and humor create a positive learning atmosphere in the class, and the instructor's abilities to explain, listen and analyze are remarkable. I am glad I took this course and suggest every ESL speaker look into it, too."
-Nina Maystrovich, program assistant, Oakland Business Development Corp.

"I am shy by nature and at times feel paralyzed in the presence of native (English) speakers. Speaking Effectively: Presentation Skills for Non-Native English Speakers has helped me develop my confidence. The instructor's constant encouraging attitude, wise remarks, and multiple exercises helped me to
dramatically improve my skills."

-Galina Kimber, Volunteer, City College of San Francisco

"Small Talk Made Easy:
Understanding and Using Idiomatic Language
has whet my appetite for more. Since idiomatic expressions are used in everyday settings, there is a need to be up-to-date and feel comfortable. Thanks to a dynamic instructor, my soul wants more and more..."

-Lorenzo Ramos,

"Business Writing for Non-Native English Speakers was a wonderful balance between grammar and writing. What I specifically liked is that we worked with our own writing, which meant we worked with our problems. I think I conquered my fear of writing."

"Great class! Great materials! All because of a great teacher. In Grammar Review I learned so much in such a short time that I surprised even myself."
