Admission

To be admitted to an academic certificate program, students should have at least 56 units of academic credit with a minimum GPA of 2.0 or sufficient experience to demonstrate they can perform upper division work. Students who do not have 56 units are encouraged to apply and may be admitted to a program on a conditional basis. Up to nine units may be taken prior to formal acceptance in the program. An entrance application form and a $50 non-refundable fee must be submitted upon completion of the nine units (or before).

(You will need Acrobat Reader to view this PDF file.)

Registration

Acceptance in an academic certificate program does not guarantee a space in any class. Spaces are reserved only when the College of Extended Learning receives your course registration forms and fees. See the Registration section.

Required Writing Skills

Academic certificate program courses require good writing skills. Students enrolled in certificate programs that do not have baccalaureate degrees must demonstrate their writing ability soon after admission by passing the Junior English Proficiency Essay Test (JEPET), which is offered three times a year on Saturdays, or to complete English 414 (for those who do not pass the JEPET). For information on the JEPET, call the Testing Center at 415.338.2271. English 414 is regularly offered through the Open University program through the College of Extended Learning.

Award of Certificate

Graduation applications must be submitted at least four weeks before the end of the semester. Upon graduation, students receive a certificate signifying program completion. To be graduated, these requirements must be met:

  1. The 24-unit coursework used to satisfy the requirements of the academic certificate, and must be completed with a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.0 (C) or better.

  2. At least two-thirds of the units applied toward meeting the requirements of an academic certificate program must be graded on a letter grade basis.

  3. All requirements for academic certificate programs must be completed within a seven-year time period beginning with the date of registration for the first certificate course, and ending with the date the last course requirement is completed.

  4. All financial obligations to the University must be cleared.

Fees

All courses in the College of Extended Learning are self-supporting. Course fees are noted at the end of each course description in the catalog. Course fees are subject to change. A course materials fee may be included, and a penalty fee may be imposed for late registration. There is a non-refundable academic certificate application fee of $50 due with your entrance application, and a non-refundable application fee of $50 due with your graduation application.

Employer/Agency Subsidies

Please see the Subsidy section for information on payment by subsidies.

Financial Aid

The College of Extended Learning receives no state money to support its programs; therefore, financial aid is extremely limited. For further information, see the Financial Aid page.
